Welcome to Augustana Academy
Augustana Academy’s very existence grows out of its mission statement, which is to provide educational excellence and equity to Arizona’s most vulnerable children. We admittedly and unabashedly borrowed from the Core Knowledge Foundation’s motto¹ in crafting our own mission statement because it so clearly expresses our raison d’être. In Arizona, which has one of the nation’s most progressive school choice environments, we see schools created to serve all types of subsets of children. But few choose to seek out and serve what most educators agree is the most challenging subset, minority children struggling with severe poverty.
The school’s founders were motivated by their deep-seated convictions that all children are created equal in the eyes of their creator and that our nation’s schools have a moral obligation to provide each and every child with a top-notch education. We believe that when that is carried out effectively, society as a whole benefits. The vast disparity in educational opportunities that exists based on race and economic status of children in our country is, for us, the civil rights issue of our day.
To once again borrow from the Core Knowledge Foundation’s explanation of its motto, “We believe that [by providing high quality education by] offering universal access to a shared knowledge is a primary duty of schooling, critical to literacy, and to the closing of the achievement gap between ethnic and racial [and income] groups. Most important of all, we believe that shared knowledge, a shared narrative, and shared ideals of liberty and tolerance are indispensable ingredients for effective citizenship and for the perpetuation of our democratic institutions.”²
It is for these convictions and ideals that Augustana Academy exists. We invite you to join us in supporting our efforts to live into our mission for the benefit of the children, their families and the communities in which they live.
